What good thing is true in your life right now?

“Of all the things that have changed in your life,

let this be the space where you take time

to remember the good things

that have remained constant.

Let this be the space where you feel

the ground beneath your feet

more than ever before.

Let this be the space where you

give yourself permission

to hold in your memory

the beautiful parts of your story

that make you who you are.”

Today in yoga class we started by sitting and looking out into the ocean. Because I teach on the beach, because I live in Costa Rica, because I’m a yoga teacher, because I’m interested in you breathing into your present moment, I often start yoga classes by asking you, the student, to sit and look out into the ocean and remind yourself that “You Are Here.” Because you are. You have created your reality. You dreamt (or dreamed) of this moment, you bought the plane tickets, and you have arrived on your mat. Right here and right now. And this is important. This moment is your dream that has come into reality because you decided it would. And that is very very important.

Each and every present moment allows you to take action. It isn’t magic. It’s called being intentional. Do you want to do yoga on a beach in Costa Rica? If the answer is yes there are a variety of actions that you can take in your present moment to get you here. People travel to Costa Rica and do yoga on the beach everyday . I know because I am here. People also choose a variety of other actions that lead them to very different futures as well.

And still the choice is always yours. And you only get the present moment in which to take action. Your present moments are steering the trajectory of your life in the future. The conundrum is you are never in your future - you are always only ever in your present. A present that like it or not was provided to you by your past self.

I’m not saying shitty things don’t happen to people. That’s not the case. In fact, a lot of really shitty things happen to really great people all of the time. Horrible things. And if you have a cause you care about needs your help, please, give all your time and money to those who need help. There has always been suffering in the world, killing, war, hate, greed, violence and all of these terrible things are carried out by people that used to be children. Every mass shooter was once a toddler, child, teenager. At what age does someone grow into being responsible for their own actions and not just a product of their community? ~ perhaps I’ve wandered into a tangent too big to solve in one blog post ~ Are you someone that feels you are responsible for your own actions or do you feel like everyone is making your decisions for you?

“One good this that is true in my life right now is my ability to change and grow. There are many other good things, and I am learning to cherish them.”

What beautiful things still ring true all these years later for you?
